What You NEED To Know!
Ontario Marriage Certificates
Now that you're married, you may be checking the mail for your Ontario Marriage Certificate. Unless you've applied for this, 3 months after your wedding, I'm here to tell you that it's not going to happen (due to the high volumes of completed marriage licenses, to be registered, the Marriage Registrar require a 3 month waiting period, before applying for it). Applications submitted prior to 3 months after your wedding will NOT help you. That can complicate, and delay, the entire process.
This is a separate process, in addition to getting your marriage license or registering your marriage. An Ontario Marriage Certificate is not mandatory, however, it's the only accepted document for proof that your has been registered. That's one of the reasons why the delay is so long. Your marriage must be registered BEFORE a marriage certificate can be issued. Your "Record of Solemnization of a Marriage" won't cut it. When you do apply for your certificate, you may opt to apply for it on line. Using the online application, you'll receive your Ontario Certificate of Marriage more quickly.
Bottom line, all going well, plan on a 4 month delay, from the time you get married until you have this document in hand. Plan accordingly!
Where timing is URGENT, you can request the issuing of your Ontario Marriage Certificate to be expedited. There is an additional fee for this, and you will need to provide WRITTEN PROOF of your emergency. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that your request will be met. The Office of The Marriage Registrar have the right, and authority, to assess and deem what they consider an emergency. They have the power and right to deny your request.

A Word About Marriage Licenses
Marriage licenses must be used within 90 days from when they're issued. They expire after 90 days, rendering them void and useless. A new marriage license will then be required. There are no refunds.
I recommend couples get their marriage licenses 4 - 6 weeks before their marriage. Make sure you take all the required documents with you. If you've been divorced, you'll need your "certificate of divorce" as well.
Be careful not to confuse a "certificate of divorce" with the "court order". Without all the necessary and correct documents, your license will not be issued. If you only have your "court order", you'll have to contact the court, which ordered the divorce, to get one. there will be a fee for this.
On the other hand, having all required documents, with you, makes your trip to the Clerk's office speedier. You'll leave with your license in hand in under 1/2 hour. Improper, or missing documents, will delay the issuing of your marriage license, Furthermore, you'll need to re-schedule another appointment to return with all the accurate, required documents.
Check all spelling and dates, for typos, before leaving the Clerk's office. Errors can and do happen. Errors must be corrected by individuals at the municipal office which issued the license. That means another appointment and return trip to the municipal office. You may not make the necessary corrections yourself. the ministry is VERY picky in that point!
Each municipal office can set their own rate for marriage licenses, which they issue. So, charges for marriages licenses will vary.
Municipal offices also have different schedules and openings, for scheduling appointments to get a marriage license. Some have longer waiting periods than others. Some have significantly lower waiting periods. Feel free to call different offices to find who has the shortest wait period and lowest price..

Don't have your Certificate of Divorce yet? What's stopping you? A Certificate of Divorce is not the same as the court document which has granted the divorce. These are 2 distinct documents. You need to apply for a Certificate of Divorce, separately, after your divorce has been granted. You will get this from the court that has granted you your divorce, for a fee.
Get it well ahead of time. They don't have an expiration date on them. Sometimes, there are complications in getting them. You don't want to get stuck planning a wedding, putting down deposits and then not being able to get a marriage license because you don't have a proper Certificate of Divorce. No marriage license, no ceremony, no refunds.
